Paddle Gonflable

Stand Up Paddle : All about it

  • Origin and evolution

The stand up paddle was born from the fusion between surfing and canoeing. It is in the 90's that Laird Amilton and Dave Kalama, have revived this form of water sport on the coasts of Maui, which was already practiced well before the 50's and the oblivion of this activity with the advent of short boards, which has somewhat slowed the development of its popularity.

However, this activity was really democratized in 2004 during a competition in Hawaii,

When Lord Amilton had a stroke of genius by deciding to use a classic surfboard and a paddle.

Today the SUP is used for different needs and according to the need the board differs

- For surfing: SUP boards for surfing have reduced thickness and length

- For running: SUP boards are longer, a little narrower and aerodynamic like sea kayaks

- For walking: SUP boards are rather wide and long and offer great stability.

  • Equipment

There are 2 types of SUP boards:

- Rigid stands: They are made like surfboards (material, shape etc...)

- Inflatable stands: are constantly evolving over the years to provide better sensations to the practitioners and also better performance for the competitors. Inflatable stands are made of a material called Dropstitch.

  • Equipment and accessories

To practice Stand up Paddle, you need :

- Leash (the small rope attached to the ankle that connects the surfer to his board)

- A life jacket

- The board (inflatable or rigid)

- A paddle

  • Inflatable or rigid paddle?

This is unfortunately the question that many people ask themselves when they decide to start stand up paddling (SUP) because they can't choose or know what would suit them. Generally they hesitate between rigid and inflatable stand up paddle.

  • Why choose an inflatable paddle?

  1. You can move everywhere with an inflatable paddle very easily

  2. The inflatable paddle does not weigh heavy and is very resistant to shocks

  3. The inflatable paddle prevents accidents that could damage it (for example: breakage during a shock out of the water, i. e. out of surfing activity)

  4. The inflatable is more accessible in price

  5. The inflatable can remain inflated to ensure immediate availability when used often.

  • Why choose a rigid paddle?

It is important to know that if you want a rigid paddle, you must make sure you have a place to store it, i. e. a garage for example. The rigid has the following advantages

  1. It offers better sensations than the inflatable

  2. It is more attractive aesthetically

  3. It offers a great maneuverability to the surfer who has an ease to catch the waves

  4. Provides better performance to the surfer

  5. Its rigidity offers a stability

  6. More inertia in the water

In conclusion, there is no exact science to choosing a paddle, it will depend on

  • Your needs (leisure, competition)

  • Degree of use
