Sunglasses : How to choose your sunglasses ?

WELL CHOOSED: sunglasses for sailing

Lunettes de soleil

The glasses of sunglassesin addition to being a fashion accessory for some, are intended to protect your eyes from uv rays. First of all of the sun's glare, thus bringing greater comfort. But also protect from UVrays of the sun which can be harmful at high exposure. Too frequent exposure of the eyes to the sun without protection prevents the renewal of the cells and will cause, in the long run, certain irreversible pathologies.

Sunlight can reach your eyes directly, by diffusion of the rays in the atmosphere or by reflection on a surface. The last one is often neglected but it is at least as important as direct light when you go to sea. The light reflects off the water and the hull of your boat and enters your eye from the front, but also from the sides.

How do you choose your sunglasses and what are the differences between them?

What type of glasses for sailing?

  • The categories of protection

Sunglasses are classified in 5 categories for 5 types of exposure. We detail them in the table below:

Lunettes Julbo

At Nautisports, we advise you to choose Category 3 lenses. They are very versatile and will be able to accompany you in the city as well as in the open country or even on the beach and at sea. They absorb 82-92% of visible light, so you can stay out of direct sunlight without going too dark when the sky darkens. Category 3 lenses also absorb over 96% of UVA and 99.2% of UVB. The CE 400 standard guarantees 100% UV protection.

Category 4 can be used at sea in case of very strong luminosity, but it is mainly intended for high mountain enthusiasts, whose snow makes this category of lenses necessary.

  • Are polarized lenses useful?

The polarizing treatment allows your lenses to filter out reflections, which are very annoying when we are faced with a body of water. However, they reduce the readability of LCD screens (smartphones or GPS for example).

We advise you to opt for a polarizing treatment if you are going to be in the sea, which will tend to quickly dazzle you. The mirror treatment also offers sufficient protection against reflections.

  • Photochromic lenses, to adapt to the sun

We have previously talked about the categories of protection of lenses that are unique for each lens. However, there are lenses called photochromic that vary their tint depending on the light. They become darker as the light is strong and clearer when it decreases.

They are very interesting and can cover a wider range of weather conditions while still protecting you. On the For example, the two numbers after the model name indicate that the glass can vary from a Category 2 to a Category 3.

  • The color of the lenses, a choice that can have its importance

For water sports, we recommend gray lenses because they do not distort the reality of colors and will be very effective at sea. Blue tinted lenses are also very good for sailing.

  • Hydrophobic coating, a good ally at sea

Some lenses have a hydrophobic or oleophobic coating. These are simply treatments that allow water to run off the lenses and prevent them from getting dirty. It makes it easier to clean your lenses and improves visibility.

Which frame for my lenses?

The choice of lenses is therefore essential, but a lens is nothing without a good frame.Indeed, if your frame does not provide enough coverage, your eyes will not be fully protected and the effectiveness of the lens will be greatly reduced.

For water sports, it is important to take this into account and choose a pair with enough coverage on the sides to protect your eyes from direct light and multiple reflections that do not directly affect your visual comfort but will be harmful in the long term.We offer low-density models (with a floatation cord) that make them easier to floating. This is the case of the which also offer side protection and high performance lenses. Category 3.
