Marine varnish: essential for boat maintenance

The best marine varnish is designed to preserve and beautify the wood of your boat. Boat varnish is an essential product for a complete boat maintenance and helps protect it from the various aggressions brought about by navigation and is therefore used on traditional boats.

You can apply both interior and exterior marine varnishes. The protection given to your wood will extend the life of your boat. A well-applied marine varnish can easily last several years without additional maintenance, depending on the climate (extreme or moderate) and the water that reaches the paint.

Which marine varnish should I choose?

There are many variations of marine varnish, or professional marine varnish, and it can seem difficult to choose. Let's take a look at the main categories.

First of all, in terms of composition, we find :

➡️ Single-component varnish: This type of marine varnish is designed for classic woods, enabling them to retain their elasticity. It is also suitable for marine plywood.

➡️ Two-component marine varnish: The two-component marine varnish are more resistant than single-component varnishes, but do not render any flexibility. They are best used to protect plywood.

When it comes to boat varnish rendering, this will depend on your tastes. We can find :

➡️ Gloss marine varnish : A gloss marine varnish offers, as its name suggests, a glossy coating for your boat. This glossy appearance makes for a very chic paint that will give your woodwork all its elegance.

➡️ Matte marine varnish : This matte marine varnish is more sober. It not only protects the boat, but also your eyes from the sun's glare.

Finally, the color of the varnish can be a criterion of choice, depending on the tint or transparency desired:

➡️ Colorless marine varnish: Colorless marine varnish adds no tint to the wood. It simply nourishes and protects it.

➡️ Tinted varnish: Ranging from dark to slightly amber, this type of varnish will give your wood a real facelift.

How to apply marine varnish

The first step before applying transparent marine varnish or wood boat varnish is to prepare the woodwork.

This step is designed to improve the paint's adhesion to the surface. You'll need to cut out any damaged areas and repair them first.

You can find many maintenance products dedicated to this purpose under the brand Yachtcare notably or International marine varnish.

You'll need to choose the boat varnish you wish to apply, then :

▪️ Remove all traces of the old varnish or paint. This is done by solvent-free sanding of the surface. Use manual sanding sheets and avoid creating irregularities when sanding, working as far as possible in the direction of the wood.

▪️ Remove all traces of dust and allow the wood to dry completely.

▪️ Apply an undercoat to revive the wood's color and improve the adhesion of the marine varnish. This step is not necessary for polyester, epoxy, steel and lacquered wood surfaces.

▪️ Apply varnish with a brush. You'll need to apply at least 3 to 5 even, homogeneous coats. The drying time between coats is written on each product data sheet for the varnishes we offer, but 24 hours between coats is ideal.

For a matte finish, it's advisable to apply matte boat varnish only as the last coat, the rest of the coats being gloss varnish. This gives a beautiful satin effect.

Marine varnish: beware of falling off!

When applying your varnish, be careful! It's advisable to avoid satin varnishes without anti-slip beads on your deck, for obvious reasons of risk of falling.

Instead, opt for a single-component, colorless, glossy marine varnish, for example, to avoid the risk of slipping.

Colorless varnish: maintain your boat's natural appearance

The clear marine varnishes are a popular choice for boat owners looking to protect their wooden surfaces while maintaining the natural appearance of the wood.

Among the many options available on the market, the stands out as a superior choice for all types of wood, old or new.

Its aim, like all colorless marine varnishes, is to protect wood surfaces while preserving their natural appearance.

With its ability to penetrate deep into the wood to offer maximum protection against the elements, UV rays and abrasion, its resistance to salt water and its exceptional durability, it is the ideal choice for classic or exotic wood surfaces exposed to harsh marine conditions.
