Which size lifejacket is right for you?

A lifejacket should be chosen according to your height and weight. These are the main criteria to bear in mind before purchasing your equipment. Not all lifejackets fit the same, so choose according to your activity. Last but not least, a lifejacket that fits is one that will guarantee your safety in critical sailing situations.

Foam lifejackets: which size to choose ?

Foam lifejackets follow the same nomenclature as commercially available garments, and fit your body in the same way. Choosing the right size is therefore very important for a foam lifejacket, as it can quickly make you feel uncomfortable when out on the water. As these lifejackets are reserved for water sports, your movements must be as free as possible.

Lifejacket sizes are the same as for conventional clothing: from S to XL, sometimes with a wider range of sizes from XS to XXXL. Some brands may offer products with sizes numbered from 1 to 3 or 5. If this is the case for your lifejacket, you'll find all the size equivalents for each product on the Nautisports.com website.

There are also lifejackets for adults, children and even dogs! The most important thing is that every member of the crew is safe while sailing.

Jobe : a wide choice of colors and sizes

Specializing in water sports equipment, the Jobe lifejacket brand is known for offering products in a wider range of sizes than other foam lifejackets on the market. For example, you'll find women's models in sizes S+, M+ or L+ to fit your body perfectly. The Jobe 4 Buckle Lifejacket is a good example of a lifejacket with a wide range of sizes, from XS to XXXL. This lifejacket is ISO 50 Newtons certified and made from durable PVC and nylon. It ensures the protection and safety of anyone engaged in nautical activities within 2 nautical miles of the coast, preferably someone who already knows how to swim.

Finding the right inflatable lifejacket for you

Automatic lifejackets are less uncomfortable than a foam lifejacket when badly cut. Indeed, when deflated, these jackets are so light that you hardly notice them on you. They are, however, indispensable on a boat. Most lifejackets come in one size. There's no risk of choosing a vest that's too large. The only thing you'll need to decide is whether or not to use a harness, and how the vest is to be released.

The quality of the vest lies above all in its level of buoyancy. The wrong choice of criterion can put your safety at stake, as the vest won't be able to keep you at the water's surface properly, nor guarantee you optimal rollover if you're unconscious. This criterion therefore influences the buoyancy of your lifejacket. Certain additional accessories can influence the buoyancy of your lifejacket, again independently of your size and weight.

Choose according to height and weight

The performance of lifejackets is measured by their buoyancy in the water. The effective buoyancy of a lifejacket represents its ability to keep the wearer in the water once inflated. So, the heavier you are, the more you'll need to think about wearing a lifejacket with high buoyancy.

Even if you're very heavy, you won't need a professional 290 Newton lifejacket for offshore sailing if you're just a catamaran or dinghy sailor. If you have any specific questions on this subject, our Nautisports.com customer service team will be happy to answer them by telephone.
