Primers and undercoats

Primers and undercoats are two important parts of the boat painting process, but have slightly different functions.

UNDERCOAT FOR BOAT PAINT

The boat paint undercoat , also called primer undercoat, is the first coat of paint applied to a prepared surface. Its main function is to prepare the surface for the topcoat and improve paint adhesion. It is often used to fill minor imperfections, close pores and even out the color and texture of the surface. Primers also help protect surfaces from corrosion, moisture and dirt.

PRIMER FOR BOAT ANTIFOULING

A epoxy primer , on the other hand, is a thicker coat of paint that is applied to a prepared surface and is intended to be the first topcoat. Primers also help prepare the surface for topcoats by improving paint adhesion and creating a uniform, smooth finish. Primers are often used on surfaces such as wood, steel and aluminum. They are specific to a type of surface and are designed to provide optimal protection for that particular material.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRIMER AND UNDERCOAT?

The undercoat is a thin layer that is applied before the primer to prepare the surface and improve paint adhesion, while the primer is a thick layer that is applied first to protect the surface against environmental elements and to prepare the surface for the topcoat. It is important to choose the right product for each step of the painting process to ensure a quality and durable final result.

THE BEST BOAT PAINT PRIMERS ARE ON NAUTISPORTS

Primers and undercoats for boats are essential for preparing the boat hull before painting. They allow a smooth and uniform finish and better adhesion of paint and antifouling. This is the case, for example, of the One Up International single-component undercoat which is a single-component primer for the preparation of wooden surfaces. It is easy to apply and dries quickly, which saves you time in preparing the hull. Compatible with all types of paint and antifouling, this primer can be used above the waterline.

The Resolution Primer Stoppani single-component primer is a very interesting primer based on chlorinated rubber resin and aluminum pigment, therefore two-component, for the preparation of surfaces receiving antifouling. Its excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance make it ideal for boats operating in salt water. This primer can be used as a primer before painting or as a protective layer on surfaces highly exposed to degradation.

Finally, the Propeller Primer International Single-Component Primer is an epoxy-based primer for preparing propellers and rudders. This product provides excellent adhesion and durability, extending the life of the propeller and rudder. It is one of the primers that dries the fastest. Compatible with all types of paint and antifouling.

In addition to these three products, the International antifouling range includes many other products such as Gelshield Epoxy Primer, Interprotect, VC-TAR2, etc. The use of quality undercoats and primers is essential to achieve a professional and durable finish on your boat.
