Mooring Lines

Mooring ropes : essential on board your boat

The rope is divided into several categories: the rope for halyards, for sheets .... but also the rope for mooring. When you go out on your boat, you must be equipped with a specific rope that will allow you to anchor at sea or to moor at the pontoon. Whether you are anchored on an anchor, on a dead body, or on a pontoon, it is an essential element to have on board your boat since it immobilizes, stabilizes and secures it.

It is important to get the right rope for your boat and the conditions of your mooring. As a general rule, mooring lines are stranded and less braided. Stranded rope is composed of strands, i. e. a set of twisted wires. And for these to form a rope, it is necessary to have 3 or 4 strands. Nevertheless, to stabilize yourself on the quay, there are braided mooring ropes such as the Polyester Mooring Rope Sablons.

Characteristics to know before buying your mooring line

If you are about to buy rope to renew your mooring line or even your mooring line, it is advisable to find out beforehand about the important elements to take into account. Some characteristics will make the rope more of a secondary mooring like theMalo Motion Leaded Mooring Lineand others will make it a real mooring rope with elongation to hang on the pontoon, such as the Polyester Mooring Rope 3 Strands Quay Malo Motion.

In order to make the right choice, here are the characteristics, besides diameter and breaking load, to know: damping, tensile strength, flexibility, splicing, lightness, hydrophobicity, as well as abrasion resistance. Depending on the rope you choose, it will be more or less efficient on the qualities mentioned above.

There are also leaded mooring lines like the one mentioned above. The specificity of this one is that it is used for light anchors. For more information on the characteristics of the rope you wish to order, do not hesitate to contact the customer service available 5/7 days.

Choose your hawsers to ensure the safety of your boat

Also called "hawser", the mooring rope is chosen according to the size of the boat and its weight. If you have 3-strand polyester, 16-strand polyester, 3-strand polypropylene or 3-strand polyamide, these are adapted to the boat according to its weight and length.

The longer the boat is and the heavier it is to move during navigation, the bigger the diameter of the rope you choose. In order to insure your sailboat when you moor, it is advisable to register on your order list the right diameter and the right boat end. Indeed, you will have understood that the diameter is important. This is due to the strength required from the rope to resist the power of the water, and therefore resist breaking.

In general, hawsers and mooring lines are equipped with a flexibility to allow an elongation and thus avoid this breakage. In addition to this, the diameter of the rope, which intuitively, the thicker it is, the more the rope will tend to resist. For more details, do not hesitate to consult the size guides when you are on the page of the desired rope. These will help you choose your line and its diameter according to the length of your sailboat.
