This is calculated as follows: sail area (m²) x wind speed² (in knots) x 0.021 = working load (in daN) x 5.

How do you determine the weight of your boat halyard?

What size boat halyard and boat sheet?

If you're replacing halyards or sheets whose current lengths suit you, the easiest way is to measure them directly. Otherwise, some standard recommendations apply to most sailboats.

For boat halyards, a length equivalent to 2.5 times the mast height is generally used. If the halyard is reeled in (with a hoist at the masthead to reduce stress), an additional mast height should be added, i. e. around 3.5 times this height.

As for the boat's sheets, the length depends on the sail concerned: count 2 to 2.5 times the boat's length for the mainsail (depending on the number of hoist strands), 1.5 to 2 times for the genoa, and around 2.5 times the boat's length for the spinnaker sheets and arms.

Which fiber for your boat halyard and boat sheet?

Moreover, its performance lies in the fact that it is perfectly suited to the aquatic environment, since in addition to all the elements already mentioned, this fiber is UV-resistant, fatigue-resistant, hydrophobic (i. e. buoyant) and allows you to reduce the diameter of your maneuvers. It is therefore more expensive than polyester.

Nevertheless, you should take the precaution of checking that your self-tailing and jammers are compatible if you need to reduce the diameter of your boat rope.
