How to choose your boat paint?

If you decide to apply it yourself on your boat, you need to know the different types of boat paint on the market. For the brands, International paint is the most famous and has many ranges.

• Single-component paint: This is an easy-to-use boat paint used mainly on wood. It dries in the standard way, i. e. by evaporation of the solvent. • Two-component lacquer: It is a boat paint more difficult to apply and not recommended for wood. It dries by polymerization and offers increased resistance to abrasion. The two-component boat paints are more resistant and offer a harder and very high quality finish, but are also more difficult to apply. In this category, the offers excellent chemical, UV and abrasion resistance while providing a high quality gloss finish and is applicable on aluminum, epoxy, carbon, polyester, steel and wood.

How to apply the marine lacquer ?

To properly apply your marine lacquer, it is necessary to follow the steps below:

 

 

 

• Equip yourself properly with at least gloves, a mask, goggles and a suit

• Check the hull and detect areas where the old paint is peeling off or signs of cracking, remove them with a scraper in order to have the cleanest and smoothest finish possible. If necessary, sand the surface.

• If imperfections and irregularities appear, fill them with a putty to fill the holes

• Rinse the hull with fresh water and let it dry completely

• Delineate the waterline and apply a tape along it to apply the paint above the waterlineabove the waterline

• Check the compatibility of your oldmarine lacquerwith the new one

For this last step, it is preferable to follow the following indications. For compatible lacquers,it ispossible to apply a mono or bi-component paint on an old mono-component paint. For non-compatible lacquers: it isnot possible to apply a mono-component lacquer on an old mono-component lacquer.

• If your paintis compatible, it is possible to apply it on the old paint.

• If it is not compatible, use an undercoat that will facilitate the adhesion of the new lacquer. Then sand the undercoat lightly before applying the paint

• Homogenize the paint by mixing it perfectly

• Apply themarine paintwith a spray gun, a roller or a brush according to your preferences and the application instructions of your boat paint. Cross coat and apply 1 to 3 coats according to your needs
