Boat sunglasses

Sunglasses: essential for any sea trip

At the water's edge or on the high seas, eye protection is essential. Indeed, in addition to the rays that arrive directly from the sun, you will also be exposed to rays that reflect off the surface of the water. To protect yourself effectively against this phenomenon, you must choose your sunglasses correctly, to avoid damaging your eyes.

How to choose your sunglasses?

The first criterion to take into account when choosing your pair of sunglasses is the protection provided by the lenses. Classified into 5 categories numbered from 0 to 4, the lenses offer different protection against rays. Category 0 lenses are the least protective: they offer a degree of protection from 0 to 20%. The higher you go in the categories, the more effective the protection is. A pair of category 4 sunglasses offer protection of up to over 90%. However, keep in mind that category 4 glasses are not authorized for driving because the lenses slightly distort vision and can alter certain colors. For navigation, we generally choose sailing sunglasses of category 3, category 4 being more intended for mountaineers.

Once the protection criteria are known, you can make your choice based on other criteria, such as buoyancy. Indeed, certain models of sail sunglasses float, to prevent them from sinking when they fall into the water. Opting for a pair of floating glasses can be very practical, especially when sailing on a dinghy.

Choosing the right pair of boat glasses is ultimately quite obvious: the best protection is desired. We nevertheless recommend a category 3 pair so that you can use it on a daily basis without restriction (especially for driving). You will find a selection of sailing glasses and floating glasses on Nautisports.com.
