Choose your thermal underwear

Sous vetement thermique homme

Thermal underwear and the 3-layer rule

For effective protection against the elements at sea, it's customary to apply what's known as the 3-layer rule. Each protective layer has a specific role to play. The first layer (thermal underwear), must keep you warm and breathable to keep your skin dry during effort. The second layer, the fleece jacket, must keep your body warm. Finally, the third layer (the shift jacket) should not keep you warm, but protect you from rain and wind.

Choosing the right thermal underwear

Each layer complements the other, and you need to choose your 3 layers carefully to take full advantage of the complementary nature of this system. When it comes to thermal underwear (i. e. the first layer), it's essential to consider three criteria: breathability, warmth and freedom of movement. An undergarment must keep you warm and let moisture escape. If a thermal underwear doesn't meet these first two criteria, it's best to opt for another model. Next, it's important that the underwear is comfortable and allows you the best possible freedom of movement, so as not to affect the maneuvers you're about to perform. Nylon, polyester, spandex or elastane will give you great freedom of movement, but if you're looking for more thermal comfort, merino wool is the material to go for.
