Thermal underwear and the 3-layer rule

For effective protection against the elements at sea, it's customary to apply what's known as the 3-layer rule. Each protective layer has a specific role to play. The first layer (thermal underwear), must keep you warm and breathable to keep your skin dry during effort. The second layer, the fleece jacket, must keep your body warm. Finally, the third layer (the shift jacket) should not keep you warm, but protect you from rain and wind.

Choosing the right thermal underwear

When it comes to thermal underwear (i. e. the first layer), it's essential to consider three criteria: breathability, warmth and freedom of movement.
