Boat safety equipment

Mandatory or essential, it is essential to define the safety equipment you will need on board your boat. Life jackets, life rafts and other distress beacons are a tiny part of the safety equipment to be provided before going to sea. Embarking without it can lead to a severe fine in the event of a defect if checked by Maritime Affairs, Customs or the Gendarmerie.

What safety equipment must be on board to be in compliance? What are the risks involved in case of default? As recreational boaters are not always careful about checking the safety equipment on board, we recommend the utmost rigor. Few people know it, but, for example, the number and type of fire extinguisher to have on board are defined in the boat's Owner's Manual and, failing that, in Division 240. Therefore, remember to refer to the corresponding documentation if you have any doubts about safety and its equipment.

Thanks to our safety equipment section available online, find all the mandatory equipment according to your navigation area. Buying a life jacket adapted to your program on Nautisports will avoid any failure in case of control, not to mention the fact that it can save your life in case of damage at sea. Safety is everyone's business, at sea as on land.

HARNESSES & TETHERS

The harness, and the tether associated with it, is a safety device that allows a crew member to attach to a fixed point on the hull or to the lifeline on board. It thus prevents any crew members from falling overboard. Harnesses and Lifelines are very useful, even essential, during maneuvers on deck in rough weather and heavy seas.

Practical, you will find on our site many automatic vests already equipped with a harness, textile or stainless steel ball according to your choice. With Nautisports, treat yourself to the best in maritime safety by purchasing a life jacket with harness and safety tether.

LIFEBUOYS

In the shape of a crown, orange in color and generally provided with 4 reflectors, the lifebuoy is the safety equipment known to all. Present on board all boats, bodies of water and seashores, the Lifebuoys are generally connected to a throwing line to bring a castaway back on board or ashore.

The lifebuoy remains the first reflex to have in case of a person falling into the water. Different versions of floating devices exist: crown buoy, Silzig buoy or horseshoe buoy, but all will serve to keep the victim's body on the surface if they are able to grab it.

LIFE RAFTS

Mandatory only in offshore and semi-offshore zones, the Life raft are compressed inflatable life rafts stored in a bag or container. A life raft deploys and inflates automatically by the action of the skipper or boater in case of danger. To simplify their use, the latest ISO 9650 standard has made it possible to adapt the manufacture of life rafts on an international scale.

Please note that life rafts are designed according to a certain number of crew members (from 4 to 12 passengers) and according to the distance from a shelter. They include on board the safety equipment essential for an emergency rescue at sea, as well as the food allowing the survival of the castaways for several days.

FIRST AID

In the same way that you equip yourself during a mountain hike by slipping a first aid kit into your backpack, you embark with equivalent safety equipment before going to sea. Accidents and everyday boo-boos are the same on a sailboat as at home: cuts, bruises, burns... The only difference is that the First Aid at sea are governed by Division 240. Make sure that the contents of your first aid kit comply with this standard.

Waterproof first aid kit, survival blanket, anti-seasickness bracelets, first aid kit >6NM... find everything you need to prevent and assist crew members.

DISTRESS BEACON

Manual or automatic, once triggered the Emergency beacon makes the link between your emergency situation and the rescue services and surrounding ships by transmitting your GPS position. Once sent by the beacon, the distress signal is received by the COPAS-SARSAT satellite network and transmitted to the nearest SAR (Search And Rescue) center.

To make the choice of the right distress beacon, visit our website and select the appropriate model. At sea or on land, our different models of distress beacons are available for sale in delivery. For an EPIRB distress beacon, an MMSI number will be requested for faster identification.

SAFETY KNIFE

Different from a standard sailor's knife, the safety knife is only used in cases of extreme emergencies. Strap cutter, rope cutter, rescue knife or line cutter, the has different names for a very specific use. As sailing is a risky sport, the safety knife has quickly found its place on board in the safety equipment category.

The serrated blade of the safety knife is provided with sharp teeth which allow it to remain sharp without special sharpening. It is thus easy and quick to get rid of or release a crew member who is drowning by cutting the lanyard of a life jacket. In a fixed position or to be carried on oneself, the safety knife can also be very useful to cut a sheet on a cata that capsizes for example.

Be careful not to confuse it with the survival knife, dedicated to use on land. Whether it is the shape of the handle or the blade, the safety knife is easily identifiable on board and can float at sea if necessary.

IOR POLE & THROWING LINE

Especially mandatory in IOR regattas and races, as its name indicates, the IOR pole is a safety device used for signaling and locating a man overboard. If it is thrown quickly, the IOR pole is a particularly effective way to recover any crew member who has fallen into the water.

To ensure the rescue of a man overboard, connect your crown buoy to your boat by a throwing line. This floating and braided rope, for a better grip by the shipwrecked, will allow you to bring back on board any person who has fallen into the water.

Discover our dedicated selection IOR boom and jet line for maximum safety in regatta or pleasure. Complementary safety equipment, IOR poles and throwing lines are increasingly common in navigation.

BILGE PUMP

It is often forgotten, because it is installed at the lowest point of the boat, but the bilge pump is nevertheless an essential safety element. Installing and maintaining your Bilge pump will avoid any disappointment the day you need it most, so think about it. And in the same way that you check the condition of a cartridge on a life jacket, you regularly check the proper functioning of your bilge pump on board. On Nautisports, we have both manual bilge pump models and automatic bilge pumps, the latter being the most common nowadays.

As its name indicates, the manual bilge pump will work with elbow grease and will allow a variable suction flow depending on the model. Conversely, an automatic bilge pump is powered by electricity from the network on board. It is triggered as soon as a water inlet is detected. The automatic start-up of the bilge pump is done thanks to a contactor with float. Depending on its power, an automatic bilge pump will allow the evacuation of a higher flow of water with a significant volume in liters as soon as it is started.

SURVIVAL BAG & EQUIPMENT

When the time comes to grab a boat survival bag, or grab bag in English, it is unfortunately time for you to abandon your ship to join your life raft. Be careful, these steps are made possible if the equipment of the boat is complete and that it contains on board all the equipment allowing it to take to the sea.

Even if we prefer to avoid them, these distress situations are part of the risks of sea navigation. Grab Bags are therefore inseparable from each other for a safe practice. Find on Nautisports all the equipment necessary for the equipment of your boat, as well as the associated safety equipment available for sale online.

SEA SURVIVAL SUIT

The Survival suit must be part of your safety equipment list for your boat's equipment. It may be strongly recommended, or even mandatory, depending on your navigation program. Designed to withstand the coldest temperatures, a sea survival suit can greatly increase your chances of survival by helping you fight hypothermia while waiting for rescue at sea.

There is a wide variety of boat survival suits for safety at sea, each with specific features to meet the needs of different users. Sea survival suits can be made of neoprene, nylon or waterproof materials, and can be equipped with pockets for storing essential items, such as distress flares or survival whistles.

Whether you are a sea professional or boater, it is important to choose a survival suit that suits your needs and activities. Survival suits are an essential investment for your safety. Discover our selection of sea survival suits at the best price available for sale online.
