Is it compulsory to wear a lifejacket when paddling or kayaking? We tell you!

Whether you're paddling, kayaking or pedal-boating, safety on the water is a must! You'll need a water sports lifejacket for any activity within 2 nautical miles of the coast. Embark in complete safety with our kayak and paddle lifejackets.

Paddle, kayak or pedalo: which vests do you need ?

For water-based leisure activities that commonly take place within 3.7 km of the shore or a first-aid station, there is a category of foam vests approved to 50 Newtons under standard iso 12402-5. These are regulated for both adults and children. If you were to exceed the recommended practice perimeter, your equipment would not protect you sufficiently to ensure your safety.

These Iso-certified lifejackets are actually considered to be buoyancy aids, since they only allow you to float with your head above water, and only protect those who know how to swim and are conscious. They can be used for water sports such as canoeing, kayaking, paddling or pedal-boating.

Which lifejacket is right for kayaking ?

You've saved enough money to buy your own kayak! Added to which, you've taken care to buy your paddles, and even a watertight canister to store your personal belongings. You're finally ready to head out on the river or lake of your dreams, and can't wait for the good weather to arrive! But have you thought of everything you need for yourself and your canoe-kayak? What about essential safety equipment?

To ensure buoyancy in the event of a fall into the water, even on calm or shallow water, a lifejacket is essential! For this type of water sport, the lifejacket is only an aid to buoyancy. It is therefore recommended that you know how to swim. For your comfort throughout an afternoon on the water, we recommend neoprene or nylon models. The Helly Hansen lifejacket Rider Vest is specially designed for kayaking. It's made of foam, with a polyester coating and neoprene on the shoulders for added comfort and flexibility. What's more, it's available in sizes XXS to XL, and in a range of colors, for a price of around €60.

If you're not sure you've found what you're looking for, you can use our online price comparison tool to help you make your decision, or call our switchboard from 9am to 12pm and 2pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

The paddle safety vest

If you're reading this paragraph, you're probably on the side of the "Paddle Team". You might think that paddling doesn't require a lifejacket, since it floats on the water and you can sit on it with your feet in the water. But these ideas are wrong! It's true that you don't need a lifejacket with a high buoyancy capacity, given the perimeter you'll be venturing into. But if you're paddling by the sea, and you're drifting a bit too much, due to wind or rougher seas, you'll need a paddle lifejacket for your safety on board.

You don't have to wear it, but if it's not fastened it seems possible that your vest could fall off while you're paddling. So, when it comes to choosing your vest, depending on the price you're prepared to pay, it's likely to differ little from a kayak vest, given that the same standards apply.

Whether for yourself or as a gift for your child, nautisports.com offers a wide choice of models. In fact, we offer you the most suitable vest for your child: the Jobe 50 Newton Child Warm LifeJacket . It's a sleeveless jacket with a design that's sure to impress. In fact, this nylon safety vest, with its front zip and inside pocket, offers unrivalled comfort and freedom of movement. Available for men, women and children, it's the perfect gift for the whole family, creating a true Paddle Family.

Our lifejacket brands for a safe paddleboat trip

You're on the beach, with family or friends, and you feel the urge to go pedal-boating. But you're worried about drifting along the seashore. Wondering if the vest provided will be enough? And will the safety vests be enough to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing?

In most situations, you'll be equipped with a 50 Newton foam vest, unless the vendor no longer has a vest of this Iso standard, and can therefore provide you with a higher approval. When it comes to quality and comfort, there are a number of well-known brands whose names you should remember. To make sure you're well equipped, you can refer to the following brands: Helly Hansen, Jobe, Plastimo or Zhik.

However, if you feel you'd rather have your own lifejacket than rent one, you can purchase one from nautisports.com.
